Abstract
532,456. Fabrics composed of threads united by adhesives; laminated materials; glass fibres. VERSIL, Ltd., and PALMER, S. July 21, 1939, No. 21210. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXIII] A tape or strip of glass fabric is produced by making a helical cut on a laminated sheet of fibres while it is still on the drum on which it has been formed, the sheet being composed of layers in which the fibres in one layer are at an angle to those of the adjacent layer or layers. The sheet of fibres may be formed by winding a layer 12c on a drum 4, spraying the layer with a binding medium, cutting the layer along a line parallel with the axis of the drum, and then removing the layer and attaching it to the drum again with the fibres at an angle, say, a right angle, to their former direction. A second layer is then wound on the first layer, and the laminated sheet is sprayed with a binder, the drum being heated if a baking varnish is used. A backing of paper, asbestos paper, papier mache, or textile material may be placed around the drum before the first layer of fibres is wound on. The strip or tape may be cut from the laminated sheet by making a helical cut with a cutting wheel 40 mounted on a fixed leading-screw 41 carried by spring controlled arms 42. The wheel 40 is pressed against the drum and is rotated by it, and makes a helical cut along the sheet. The tape or strip may be sprayed with or passed through a bath of baking varnish as it is wound off the drum, and then passed through a heated drying chamber.
