Abstract

532,419. Spray carburetters. STRAUSS, E. Aug. 30, 1939, No. 24845. [Class 7 (iii)] Air admitted at 23, 22 is intimately mixed with liquid fuel admitted at 18, 20, 21 as they pass through a space 17 between a rotating disc 11 and a fixed disc 13, vanes 30 on the disc 11 co-operating with fixed vanes 31 to force the mixture past a valve 34 to conduits 35, 36, the latter, of which leads to a nozzle 37 entering a Venturi 38, through which further air enters to form the mixture passing to the engine by the induction pipe 39. Secondary air may be admitted at 26, 24. The other conduit 35 leads. the surplus rich mixture to a separator 43, from which the liquid fuel is returned by a pipe 44 to a tank 45, while the air is delivered by a pipe 46 to the inlet 29. The upper part of the separator is also provided with an air-inlet filter 47. The disc 11 is driven at starting by an electric motor 49, and, when the engine attains a certain speed, by an engine-driven shaft 51 and a. centrifugally-operated friction clutch 53. When the clutch is closed to transmit the engine drive, the motor 49 is cut out by a switch 69. The throttle 40 may be connected by a rod 75 to the valve 34, and valves 27, 28 are provided on. the air inlets 23, 26. The fuel pump 71 is driven by gearing 77. In modifications, the rotary disc is formed with conical surfaces, or with vanes interacting with blades on the fixed disc so as to exert a beating action on the fuel and air. The conical part of a rotary disc may be formed with a groove to trap solid matter. Also the fuel pump in four-stroke engines may be driven by cams so phased as to supply the fuel intermittently at the points in the cycle when the mixture is to be supplied to the engine ; this pump may be controlled simultaneously with the mixture throttle.
