Abstract

532,142. R÷ntgen-ray inspection apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Aug. 17, 1939, No. 23753. [Class 98 (i)] X-ray inspection apparatus comprises a carriage on which is carried a shield having an opening in which a fluorescent screen is mounted and a source of X-rays in an impervious casing with a window spaced from the shield and arranged to project rays only on to the screen, there being an impervious observation sleeve extending outwardly from the shield, and a control switch, means for moving the article being inspected between the screen and X-ray source, means for marking the article, and means for immobilizing the. carriage being mounted in a shielded position accessible to the observer. The apparatus shown is intended for inspecting tyres and comprises a trolley supporting a casing 13 containing the X-ray tube and having a window 15 through which the rays pass to a fluorescent screen 11 mounted in a ray-impervious shield 27, which protects the observer. A conical sleeve 53 of ray-impervious material extends forwardly and upwardly of the screen 11 and carries an eye-shade 59. The trolley is run beneath the jacked-up wheel carrying the tyre and is maintained in position by depressing pivoted ieet 103 to raise the forward wheels from the ground. To rotate the tyre during inspection, a sprocket-wheel 75, which is chain-driven from a handle mounted on the front of the screen 27, carries arms 89 connected by cords 73 to a cap 69 screwed on the valve stem. To mark the tyre at desired points a plunger mounted in a sleeve 35 is depressed against a spring to bring its marking- hand 43 into contact with the tyre. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 539,304.
