Abstract

531,713. Magnetically operated locks. EAGLE LOCK CO. July 29, 1939, No. 22094. Convention date, July 29, 1938. [Class 44] In a revolving barrel lock which can only be released by the use of an appropriate magnetic key the outer fixed cylinder 5 and rotatable barrel 9 have longitudinal grooves 16, 17 which register in the locking position shown and house locking balls 18 which prevent rotation of the barrel. The balls are of magnetic material and are movable along the grooves by a magnetic key, the appropriate key moving the balls into register with a circumferential groove 19 so that the barrel may be rotated. The key 20 has a cylindrical portion 21 with an aperture housing a permanent magnet 23 disposed transversely at such a position that the balls are moved with the magnet to release position when the key is inserted. The magnet is hidden and retained by a sleeve 22. The key also has a projection 28 which passes through a lateral slot 29 in the keyhole in an outer cover-plate 11 into a recess in a terminal flange 10 on the barrel which is thereby turned when the key is rotated. The key may also have a projection which passes through a notch 26 of the keyhole. To ensure correct register of the grooves in locking position a spring-pressed ball 30 housed in cylinder 5 snaps into a recess in flange 10. There may be one pair of registering grooves or as shown. two pairs. The Specification also describes a modification with four pairs, the key having two magnets. Locking is effected by the magnet moving the balls out of register with the circumferential groove as the key is withdrawn. Variations of the lock are produced by different positions of circumferential groove and different relative angular dispositions of notch and slot 26, 29, with corresponding positions of magnet and projections on the key. Owing to the smallness of the magnets they must be of highly magnetic material and an alloy of aluminium, nickel and cobalt. known as "Alnico" is stated to be the most suitable.
