Abstract

531,651. De-lustring artificial silk. TAYLOR, W. I., OLPIN, H. C., and HOUSE, K. R. July 28, 1939, No. 21952. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Textile materials having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose are fire-proofed and possibly de-lustred by treatment with an aqueous dispersion of a halogenated phosphoric acid ester. Suitable esters are tri- (monochlorethyl) phosphate, tri- (monochlorbutyl) phosphate, the corresponding bromo esters and phosphoric acid aryl and aralkyl esters halogenated in the nucleus. The cellulose derivatives may be cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate and nitro-cellulose-acetate, and ethyl and benzyl cellulose. Suitable conditions for the treatment are 3 to 5 hours at 75-80‹C. Examples describe the use of aqueous dispersions containing a sulphation product of oleyl alcohol and pine oil, with or without a dyestuff, and dispersions containing soap and Turkey red oil in which the yarn is simultaneously de-lustred. The fireproofed yarn, especially of heavy denier (5,000 or more), may be used in the pile of rugs and carpets. The process is especially applicable to voluminous yarns made for example by crimping by rollers or twisting first in one direction and then in the opposite direction or by the process described in Specification 459,781, in which the hot aqueous treatment may be the fire-proofing treatment. The Provisional Specification describes the use of tributyl, tricresyl, triphenyl, triethyl glycol and ethyl glycol dicresyl phosphates and dispersions in non-aqueous media such as petroleum hydrocarbons. Specification 460,575 also is referred to.
