[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] A gas free from moisture and hydrogen and suitable for burning in furnaces for the hardening of high speed steel and for neutral or reducing atmospheres in the heat treatment of metals is obtained from a gas producer using charcoal. The gas initially obtained with the use of normal air with or without the addition of steam is discharged, or used for heating purposes, but, when the producer is delivering mainly carbon monoxide and nitrogen, dehydrated air is supplied to the producer (and to the combustion chamber or furnace) whereby the production of hydrogen is avoided. The gas from the producer may be passed through a condenser and a silica gel drier to prevent any moisture reaching the furnace. Specifications 455,276, 455,436, 455,485 and 455,486 are referred to.
