[Class 106 (ii)] The adhesiveness of gummed paper &c. is determined by measuring the force required to detach a sample from a support the force being applied at right-angles to the adhering surface. Mounted on a bar 1 is a cylinder 2 having two pistons 4, 5 joined together by a rod 3. The rod 3 is connected by an arm 6 to a parallel rod 8 sliding in guides 10, 11 and adapted to operate a ram 9 to which is adapted to be clamped the ungummed surface of a circular sample of gummed paper. Facing the ram is a guide 13 for a slider 14 carrying a piece of corrugated millboard 17 to which the sample is to be stuck, a sponge 20 and water container 19 together with a thermometer 21. In use, the slider 14 is moved down thus dampening the surface of the sample. A timing device 22 with hands 23, 24 is set to an interval for the test, and when the slider 14 engages the lever 25 is started. At the same time the slider engages a contact 26 and energizes a solenoid 32 to move a three-way cock 28 and admit compressed air from a pump 33 through pipe 29 to the cylinder 2. The pistons are moved to the left, also the ram 9 and the sample applied to the millboard 17. After the set interval, the other solenoid 32 is energized to reverse the cock and admit air via pipe 27 to push piston 4 and ram 9 to the right. The force required to do this is indicated by a pressure gauge 38. A second pressure gauge 35 indicates the pressure in the pump. To indicate tensile strength a sample strip of paper is clamped at 39 and 40 and the force indicated by the gauge 38. For bursting strength a sample is clamped at 43 and a ram 42 used.
