Abstract

530,833. Artificial silk &c. ; treating textiles with liquids ; resinous condensation products &c. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 19, 1939, No. 17823. Convention date, June 28, 1938. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Synthetic linear polyamide filaments, fibres, bristles, films, fabrics, and the like are subjected to treatment with a setting agent e.g. a hot, mild swelling agent such as hot water or steam, in presence of a water-soluble sulphite or bisulphite. Instead of water or steam, hydroxylated non-solvents such as methyl or ethyl alcohol may be used as the setting agent. Polyamides obtainedfrom amino acids or from diamines and dibasic acids may be used for making the filaments or other products. The treatment imparts a high crimp retentivity to crimped polyamide filaments, sets straight filaments in straight position, and imparts to bristles a high power of recovery from deformation and increased wear resistance. Sodium, ammonium, potassium, and magnesium sulphites and bisulphites may be used. The setting medium may contain C-hexadecyl betaine, gelatine, sodium oleate or silicate, dodecyl sodium sulphate, Turkey red oil, alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonates, alkyl sodium sulphates, fatty acid esters of ethanol sulphuric acid, and sulphonated oils. The crimp in filaments may be set by carrying out the treatment with steam at 100-150 C. Bristles may be set using hot water at 85-100 C. The sulphite may be included in the setting medium or the materials may be impregnated with the sulphite before treating them with the setting medium. The process is applicable to the setting of knitted stockings containing the polyamide filaments. In an example polyhexamethylene adipamide yarn is soaked in water, passed through mineral oil heated to 150‹C., washed with toluene and then with acetone. It is soaked in water, cold-drawn, soaked in aqueous sodium sulphite solution and allowed to crimp by drying in relaxed condition. It is then set by exposure to saturated steam at 100‹C. In another example, a stocking knitted from cold-drawn polyhexamethylene adipamide yarn is immersed in an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite and isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate. It is placed on a rigid form of the shape of a leg and placed in a chamber containing saturated steam. The treated stocking is free from wrinkles and resistant to wrinkling when treated with hot dye liquids. Specifications 461,236, and 461,237 are referred to.
