Abstract
530,722. Heating pitot tubes by electricity. KOLLSMAN, P. July 12, 1939, No. 20275. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] An electrically heated pitot tube comprising a tubular shell 1 having a dynamic pressure opening 11, Fig. 1, and static pressure openings 8, is provided with means for locally heating those parts of the tube, especially behind the openings 8, at which ice formation would be greatest. Inside the shell 1, Fig. 1, are arranged an electric heating element 4 near the opening 11, and an element 5 at the bend of the dynamic pressure duct 3, the elements being contained in metal casings 40, 50 attached to the shell 1 by electrodeposition. In a modification, Fig: 3, only one heating element 4 is provided and is joined to a metallic member 14 which conducts heat to other parts of the shell 1. A protuberance 17, Fig. 5, may be formed in the shell 1 to prevent passage of water to the indicating tubes 7, 9. An electric heating element 15 is provided with a heat conducting member 21 which passes into the trap 17. Water is collected on a plate 16, and passes out through a hole 22. The dynamic pressure tube 3 continues as the pipe 18, whilst the static tube 9 has an auxiliary trap member 19.
