Abstract

530,418. Testing physical qualities of materials. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T. (Schenck Eisengiesserei und Maschinenfabrik Darmstadt Ges., C.). June 23, 1939, No. 18311. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a fatigue testing machine wherein the specimen a and the member g which applies the bending stresses thereto are both rotated preferably in opposite directions, the application of the stresses preferably being communicated to the specimen from a common source, the motor e through gearing whereby the specimen is subjected to bending stresses having a different frequency from that which obtains when the specimen only is rotated. One end of the specimen is carried in a jaw b carried by a spindle b<SP>1</SP> rotated through spur and chain gear d. The other end of the specimen a is located in a ball race f mounted at the lower end of a set screw g adjustable in a bracket h connected to a spindle h<SP>1</SP> driven by chain gear k from the motor. The deflection of the specimen may be varied by moving the screw g which may embody a dynamometer to measure the degree of loading at this point.
