Abstract
409,805. Testing physical qualities of materials. HAIGH, B. P., 44, Caterham Road, Lewisham, and ROBERTSON, T. S., 15, St. Germans Place, Blackheath, both in London. Nov. 23, 1932, No. 33113. [Class 106 (ii).] Pieces of wire, wire ropes, &c. are tested by causing them, while flexed under the action of forces acting in opposite directions along one and the same straight line situated nearer to the ends than to some other part of the bent piece, to rotate about the curved axis of their flexure. In one form, Fig. 3, the end 2 of the piece is rounded or fitted with a shoe and is arranged to rotate in a cupped jewel bearing that can be adjusted in the direction 1, 2. The other end 1 also fitted with a shoe is driven by the shaft 6 of a motor 7 being held in a conical recess in the end of the shaft. The shaft 6 is mounted in a bracket 9 which is rotatable about an axis at or near the end of the test piece and perpendicular to the plane containing the curved piece which is stationary during the test. The frame 11 also carries a guide 12 which engages the test piece. The " Endurance " is measured by the number of revolutions of the piece before it breaks registered on a counter 8. When the test piece breaks a spring pushes forward the bearing for the end 2 and actuates a switch to stop the motor. In a modification of this form a different construction of grip is used and the arrangement of swivelling bracket is different. In a further form the specimen is bent into a loop the ends being crossed and gripped in chucks attached to shafts that revolve about axes in parallel planes close to each other, the angle between the shafts being 82‹. The shafts are geared together to turn through equal angles.
