Abstract
353,743. Testing steel wire ropes. SMITH, MAJOR, & STEVENS, Ltd. and MAJOR, P. C., Abbey Works, Northampton. Sept. 1, 1930, No. 26045. [Class 106 (ii).] The apparatus comprises a stationary former, means for alternately bending a sample of rope around said former and straightening the sample, and means for stressing the sample while it is bent. The upper member A<1> of the frame A is provided with bearings for rocking levers B<1>, B2. Below the member A<1> is a tensioning lever C the long arm C<2> of which is acted upon by a spring C<6> the tension of which may be adjusted by a wheel nut C<5>. The short arm of the lever is connected by a pivoted link C<8> to a crosshead C<9> working on guides C<10>. The crosshead extends laterally and has fixed to each end an attachment C<11> for the lower end of a sample D<1> of rope. The upper end of the sample is attached to the upper end of the lever B<1> or B<2> after passing between two grooved quadrants E, F. The levers B<1>, B<2> are connected by rods G<1>, G<2> to crank discs H. These are rotated by power and cause the levers to rock and lay the rope samples over the quadrants. A counter (not shown) is connected to one of the pivots of the levers to register the number of bending motions imparted to a sample. By attaching the rod to the disc at the point H<3> the sample may be bent over both quadrants. The quadrants are mounted on pivots E2, F<2> to facilitate the placing the samples in and out of the device, but are held by pins in holes E<3>, F<3> during a test. The lever pivots are adjustable to and away from the quadrants to allow a certain amount of slip.
