Abstract
280,380. Rowell, H. S. Dec. 4, 1926. Testing balance of rotary apparatus.-Comprises a method of testing dynamic balance in which the body is supported during its rotation to rook about an axis located in the rotational plane of its centre of gravity, and applying to the body a rocking moment equal and opposite to the moment causing out of balance. The frame 2 is adapted to rock about an axis 3, 3 at right angles to the rotational axis 4, 4 of the body 5 to be balanced and may be arranged in a vertical or horizontal plane. When the frame is mounted in a vertical plane, the axis 3, 3 must pass through the centre of gravity of the body 5, while if mounted in a horizontal plane, the axis 3, 3 must lie in that rotational plane of the body containing the centre of gravity. The frame may be supported on knife edges 6, 6 or trunnions, or it may be suspended by a flexible strip or strips, the body or the knife edges k being adjustable to permit of the axis 3, 3 being brought to the required position. A spindle 7 is mounted on the frame 2 parallel to the axis of the body 5 and pivoted on an axis intersecting that of the spindle are two spaced arms 8. 9 each extending on both sides of the spindle in opposite directions, each perfectly balanced and if necessary provided with balanced weights 10 at each end. Two such arms are arranged to swing on axles at right angles to each other. By varying the inclination of these arms to the shaft 7 the individual couples are varied and a resultant couple obtained which balances the out-of balance couple in the body 5. In the example shown, the shaft 7 is driven by a flexible shaft 18 and drives the body 5 by chain gear 13. The. frame 2 is resiliently supported by a spring 20, the tension of which may be varied to produce resonance with the vibration due to the out of balance of the crank shaft or body 5. The shaft 7 may be in line with the axis of the body 5, instead of parallel thereto.
