[Class 52 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] Coiled springs are con nected together to form a spring interior for mattresses, cushions &c. by assembling an end row of springs on a support which is moved relatively to a second support into which parallel rows of springs are successively placed and attached to the previous row by the wires, the end row of transverse springs 9 is placed in a trough 12 and the springs secured together by a helical tie wire. The assembly is then placed in an inverted trough 13 which is fed upwards by a cable or chain 16, Another row of springs is then inserted in the trough 12 and attached to the previous row by a tie wire 1. The trough 13 is fed upwards step by step and between each step another row of springs is attached to the preceding row. The springs may be held in the trough 13 on short projections 18 or removable pins or one wall may carry pins and be removable or hinged. The trough 13 may be guided on posts 14, the extent of each movement being indicated by slotted bars co-operating with pegs on the cables or graduated uprights co-operating with pointers or with the guides 15 on the trough 13. A number of assemblies may be made by placing pairs of troughs in frames 32, Fig. 18, radiating from and preferably swung about a vertical column 19. Each frame may be pivoted about a vertical axis mounted between upper and lower axis radiating from the column. The tie wires may be formed with a series of lateral U-bends each limb of the bend being of S-form as shown in Fig. 3 and described in Specification 515,821. The bends are clenched over the overlapped ends of the springs in order to secure the rows together the inner bends 2a being engaged over the outer coil 10 and the bends 2b at the free end being engaged under and over the subjacent coil. The clenching is effected by a tool as described in Specification 530,364, [Group XXII], comprising a pair of pointed jaws 20, 21, at the end of a portable pneumatic ram 22, the jaw 20 having a T-shaped recess 24 and the jaw 12 having an inclined face provided with a U-shaped groove 28, 29 with an open end.
