529,834. Pasteurizing milk &c. HIRON, H. W. M., LARSEN, M., ZEUTHEN, C., and ZEUTHEN, R., (trading as SILKEBORG MASKINFABRIK ZEUTHEN OG LARSEN). June 26, 1939, No. 18590. [Class 49] A high-temperature short-time process of pasteurizing liquids, such as milk &c. is characterized by the use of the method, known in itself as applied to the lower-temperature longer-time process, of passing the liquid in separate portions, each of which is individually held at the pasteurizing temperature for a definite period, through a holder to which the liquid, after having been heated to a pasteurizing temperature, is supplied in a continuous manner and from which, after the pasteurizing treatment, it leaves also in a continuous manner. As shown in the Figure, the holder comprises a horizontal rotatable body 5 divided into two series of' compartments 4 arranged on opposite sides of a plane passing through the axis of rotation, the compartments being connected in such a way that during rotation of the body the liquid passes from compartment to compartment from the inlet 3 to the outlet 7. Pressure-balancing tanks 2, 8, connected by a pipe 10, are provided at the inlet and outlet ends of the holder. In a modification a strip having a width approximately equal to the radius of the cylindrical holder body is wound helically along the inside thereof to provide a helical channel for the liquid being treated, the flow of milk being adjusted so that the level of milk in the cylinder does not reach the inner edge of the spiral strip. A heater, holder and cooler may be arranged to provide an enclosed path for the liquid.
