Abstract
1,027,847. Sterilizing liquids. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. Dec. 29, 1964 [Jan. 20, 1964], No. 2445/64. Heading A2D. An apparatus for heat treating fluids comprises a regeneration heat exchanger through one side 13 of which the process fluid passes on its way to a treatment heat exchanger 15, a flow diversion valve 16 for selectively recycling the process fluid or passing it to the other side 17 of the regeneration heat exchanger and a fluid outlet, an auxiliary fluid inlet 14 between the side 13 of the regeneration heat exchanger and the treatment heat exchanger 15, a drain outlet 23 in the recycling line 22, and a further drain outlet 21 in the output line 19. In use, hot water from an auxiliary heat exchanger 24 is fed via the auxiliary inlet valve 14 through the treatment heat exchanger 15 and the recycling line 22 to drain at the outlet valve 23. When the water leaving the exchanger 15 reaches the treatment temperature the valve 16 changes over and directs the water to the finished product side of the regeneration heat exchanger, to a cooling exchanger 18, and to drain via the outlet valve 21. Process fluid, e.g. milk, is then brought into a balance tank 11, passed to the regenerator 13 and as soon as it reaches valve 14 this is changed over so that the milk follows the starting water through the apparatus. When the milk reaches valve 21, this valve is changed over to direct the flow to the outlet. A second embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown), particularly designed for the ultra high temperature treatment of milk, comprises a two stage plant with a holding tank and a homogeniser and includes two heating sections and two regenerating sections.
