Abstract

669,589. Treating sewage. PORTEOUS, W. K. May 9, 1950. [June 1, 1949] No. 14748/49. Class 111. [Also in Groups XII and XIII] In a process for the heat treatment at a high temperature of sewage sludge which comprises passing the sludge to be treated through the inner tubes in series of two heat-exchangers each of which comprises runs of inner tubes surrounded by concentric outer tubes, cooling the heated sludge by water flowing in countercurrent in the second heat-exchanger and thereafter preheating the raw sludge by water flowing in countercurrent in the first heat-exchanger the sludge, after the pre-heating in the first heat-exchanger, is heat-treated in an independently heated apparatus and is then passed through the second heatexchanger. Cold raw sludge pumped in at c to a first heat-exchanger a is heated by water passing between an inner sludge pipe a<SP>1</SP> and an outer pipe a<SP>2</SP> and which has itself been heated in the annular spaces of a second heat-exchanger b. The sewage passes to a system of treatment tanks t<SP>1</SP>, t<SP>2</SP>, t<SP>3</SP>, which may be as described in Specification 539,622, and which are controlled by a multiple valve (not shown) so that one of the tanks is being filled while another is being emptied and the sludge is being retained quiescent in the third. The retained sludge is heated by steam passed from a pipe u to one of the inlets v<SP>1</SP>, v<SP>2</SP>, or v<SP>3</SP>. After treatment the sludge leaves by one of the outlets s<SP>1</SP>, s<SP>2</SP> or s<SP>3</SP> and gives up its heat to the water in the second heatexchanger b, finally passing to one or more decanting tanks w via a pressure control valve k. A plunger l in this valve is parted at n to allow the sludge under pressure to hold it up and at the same time escape from an outlet o. A similar valve j is provided to maintain the pressure and prevent steam formation in the water system. between the first heat-exchanger and an open tank e from which water is withdrawn by a pump f. The valve j may be dispensed with and the tank e closed. Specification 653,984 also is referred to.
