Abstract

529,772. Steel. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A. (Brassert, H. A.). April 17, 1939, No. 8568. [Class 72] In the production of steel by the acid or basic Bessemer process, the molten metal is subjected, after all blowing operations have been concluded, to a vigorous boil produced by reaction with iron oxide or iron oxide and carbon added to the bath in order to remove nitrogen and other gases present. The blow may be continued until the carbon and phosphorus contents are below the desired amount and carbon then added or when using the basic process the blow may be discontinued when the metal contains more phosphorus than the desired amount and then both iron oxide and carbon are added. When using the acid process, the blow may be discontinued when the metal contains more carbon than the desired amount and then iron oxide is added. The necessary heat to carry out the process may be supplied by using a pig iron of relatively high silicon and/or manganese content, by pre-heating the pig iron, supplying heat to the converter by means of a gas or oil flame or by making the usual alloy additions in liquid form. The converter may have the form described in Specification 507,200, and then when the blowing has been ended, the converter is turned down so as to form a shallow bath of metal before the boil is produced. Specification 518,212 also is referred to.
