528,759. Rubber thread and strips. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. May 4, 1939, No. 13362. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1938. [Class 70] In making rubber strip or thread, an unvulcanized rubber film is stretched, allowed partially to retract, heated to relieve the stresses and vulcanized. A strip of latex is formed on an endless band 13 by contact with a roller 12 dipping into a bath 10. The strip is dried as by carrying through a heated chamber 23 and is stripped from the belt by a pulley 24 driven at a speed about six times that of the belt. The strip passes round a pulley 28 driven slightly quicker than the pulley 24, a pulley 32 of the kind described in Specification 448,605, which causes the strip to be rolled to form a cylindrical thread and a pulley 34 driven at the same speed. The strip then passes on to a vulcanizing drum 36 which is driven at a speed less than that of the pulley 24, which allows relaxation of the thread to take place. The stresses remaining in the thread are removed by heating before vulcanization takes place. Heating before vulcanization may be effected by using in the latex composition a delayed action accelerator such as dipentamethylene thiuram disulphide or tetramethyl thiuram di- or tetra-sulphide.
