Abstract

1,193,071. Printing rollers. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 30 May, 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 24402/66. Headings B6C and B6G. [Also in Division B2] A smooth-surfaced, elastomer-covered roller for use in printing is produced by applying to the elastomer-covered roller core by a latex dipping process a smooth coating of elastomer. The elastomer-covered roller core may be made by wrapping plies of unvulcanized elastomer composition around a spindle and vulcanizing the elastomer composition, if necessary grinding the elastomeric surface obtained to produce an even cylindrical surface. The wrapped elastomer layer of the roller may be solid or cellular natural or synthetic rubber. The smooth coating of elastomer may be formed from a natural or synthetic rubber latex, e.g. a butadiene-acrylonitrile latex. The coating of elastomer may be separately produced by forming a sleeve of elastomer by a dipping process and subsequently fitting the sleeve to the rollers by means of adhesives. In the example a steel spindle was cleaned by shot blasting, and coated with a chlorinated rubber. Unvulcanized synthetic rubber sheet was wrapped around the spindle and the synthetic rubber was then vulcanized. After vulcanization the roller was ground, coated with an adhesive, and dipped into a butadiene-acrylonitrile latex. The roller was then immersed in a solution of calcium nitrate to coagulate the coating. The dipping and coagulating processes were repeated to deposit a second latex coating on to the first and the roller was finally dried and vulcanized.
