Abstract

1458630 Rollers DAYCO CORP 9 Sept 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 39321/74 Heading A4K [Also in Divisions B2 and B6] A roller for use in a printing machine has an outer portion made of an elastomeric matrix 15 having a cylindrical outer portion, and fibres 16 having inner portions embedded in the matrix and outer portions extending outwardly from the cylindrical surface, the fibres being arranged to lie generally longitudinally with respect to the roller, and being 4-8 denier. The fibres are preferably 5-10 mm. long, and may be of nylon, whilst the matrix may be nitrile rubber. The roller may be made by coating a core, e.g. by extrusion Fig. 4, (not shown) with uncured matrix containing the fibres, or by wrapping a sheet of uncured matrix containing fibres about the core. In either case the coating is cured and fibres exposed by grinding the surface. There are preferably a number of layers of fibres 24 contained in the matrix, so that when a first surface is worn out, grinding can reveal a fresh surface of fibres.
