Abstract
To prevent subsequent plasticizer migration an article, e.g flooring or extruded tubing, composed at least in part of a polyvinyl composition is treated by applying an adhesive for the polyvinyl composition and nylon comprising a solution of an organic di-isocyanate to the polyvinyl composition surface, applying a solution of a soluble nylon on top of the adhesive and allowing the solvent to evaporate. Soluble nylon is that soluble in lower aliphatic alcohols and the preferred nylon is one in which some of the amino hydrogens have been replaced by hydroxy methyl groups e.g. prepared by treating polyhexamethylene adipamide with formaldehyde, and may be in solution in a mixture of water and ethanol or n-propanol. The polyvinyl composition may be plasticized polyvinyl chloride sheet or polyvinyl chloride coated fabric. An additional layer of a different substance, e.g. rubber composition which may be vulcanized before or after application, asphalt, bitumen, oils and/or organic substances soluble in oils, may be adhered to the nylon layer, which layer is first coated with an adhesive for the different substance and for nylon. In examples:- (1) a polyvinyl chloride leathercloth is coated with a toluene solution of diphenyl methane diisocyanate and then soluble nylon in a propanol-water mixture is applied; (2) a polyvinyl chloride sheet is coated as in (1), then a diisocyanate-rubber mixture adhesive solution is applied to the nylon coating, and a vulcanized rubber backing, coated with rubber solution, adhered thereto; (3) as in (2) but the rubber is unvulcanized, is without a rubber solution coating, and is vulcanized subsequently.
