Abstract
528,700. Direction-finding apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 12, 1939, No. 14241. Convention date, May 28, 1938. [Class 40 (v)] A rotating direction-finding aerial, its driving motor, and other associated parts, are all mounted inside a stream-lined casing. As shown in the Figure, the pick-up from a constantly-rotating loop aerial 2 is compared with a locally-generated polyphase current to give an aural or visual indication in a known form of indicator, e.g. a cathode-ray oscillograph. The loop 2 and the local generator 8 are both driven from the electric motor 7, all three being mounted on a base-plate 1 inside a streamlined cap 14 of insulating material which may be perforated with small apertures. The loop is mounted on a support 5 which is so held by the locking device 6 that the axis of the loop is vertical whatever the inclination of the supporting surface may be. The loop pick-up is collected by contact or inductive couplings placed in the upper part of the support 5 so as to facilitate access to the element, and is fed to the receiver proper through the cable exit 13. Quadrantal error is corrected by two metallic loops mounted on either side of the loop aerial in a vertical plane either in the insulating cap or on the base plate (Figs. 7-10, not shown), " axial compensation " being effected by a longitudinal strip mounted either in the cap or on the base-plate (Fig. 11, not shown). The system may be mounted on the wing, above or in front of the pilot's seat, or below the cockpit.
