Abstract

528,573. Flanging &c. dies. LINDSAY, H. B. March 27, 1939, No. 9521. Convention date, March 6. [Class 83 (iv)] Dies, particularly for making flanged panels, have one of the die members provided with a number of fixed intersecting die portions each coacting with others thereof to present a number of arrangements for selective co-operation with the other die member without adjustment of said arrangements, to form a product of wide variation of dimensions. The press comprises a lower rectangular base frame mounting columns on which an upper rectangular frame is adjustable. The upper frame carries a motor, gearing, and eccentrics for operating an intermediate frame 43, Fig. 3, sliding on the columns and carrying a die assembly comprising plates 60 ... 63 transversely adjustable on girders 44, 45, 46 and supported therefrom by clips 67 engaging plates 69 secured to the girders and plates 64, 65, adjustable along plates 60 ... 63 and supported therefrom by bolts 86 and flanges on the plates 64, 65 engaging recesses on the other plates. The plates 69 and clips 67 are provided with perforations 77, 73 for receiving taper pins, the central plate having two rows of perforations at each side so that plates 60, 62 can abut plates 61, 63 or can be spaced therefrom by distance pieces. A series of holes 89 for bolts 86 is provided for holding the plates in adjusted position. The undersides of the plates 60-63 have longitudinal grooves 96, 120, Fig. 13, and transverse grooves 104, 125 &c. variously spaced as shown. The transverse grooves register with grooves in the plates 64, 65. When a distance piece is employed between the plates 60, 61 the grooves 96 extend across this and likewise the grooves 120 across the other distance piece. At the points of intersection of the longitudinal and transverse grooves holes are formed to receive rotatable die-plugs 140 having a groove 145 extending straight across and a groove 146 extending from the centre radially to one side and at right angles to the groove 145. The grooves have a mitred intersection. The plugs have three positions, two for corner settings and one for straight through. The shanks 142, Fig. 26, of the plugs extend through the back of the plates 60 &c. and are slotted to pass a locking- key 161 between which and a split pin 159 washers confine a spring 158 that holds the plug seated. The keys are engageable between any one of three pairs of locating-pins 166 carried by the plates 60, are retained in the shanks by rivets 163 passing through inclined slots 164 in the keys to permit lifting by finger pieces 165 to clear the pins 166 when rotating from one position to another. The punch member is mounted on the lower frame and comprises a similar set of plates to the plates 60 to 65 ; being correspondingly grooved and adjustable. The punch is sectional being built up from corner pieces 174, Figs. 5 and 6, placed in intersections of the grooves according to the size of panel required. The spaces between the corner pieces are filled by straight sections selected from a sufficient stock of assorted lengths. The punch and die illustrated are for stamping a panel 92, Fig. 7, to provide flanges 93 with turned over edges 94 and to permit this the blanks are notched at the corners. The grooves may be arranged to produce other than rectangular shapes, and if desired one or more edges may be left unflanged.
