Abstract
528,404. Transmitting mechanical power. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CARNEGIE, H. S., and YOUNG, J. B. May 5, 1939, No. 13529. [Class 38 (iv)] Separately driven alternators 1, 2 supplying a common load 1, 2 which is controlled by switch 10 only when the alternators are not supplying power to the load, e.g., when field switches 8, 9 are open, have auxiliary means for keeping the alternators in synchronism. These means may be auxiliary alternators 6, 7 electrically tied together, these machines 6, 7 may also supply auxiliary loads. In one alternative the machines 6, 7 are connected in series with the machines 1, 2 and auxiliary opposing fields on the machines 1, 2 are energized when the switches 8, 9 are open so that no voltage appears on the leads to the load 3. In a further modification the windings 6, 7 are combined with the windings 1, 2 on the same armatures and auxiliary fields of half the number of poles are energized when the switches 8, 9 are opened.
