Abstract

528,274. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 2, 1939, No. 13107. Convention date, May 19, 1938. [Class 40 (v)] To prevent distortion, telegraph signals are applied to the control grid of an amplifier, whilst an auxiliary grid is supplied with a unidirectional control voltage which is dependent upon the signals, but is derived from a circuit independent of the particular amplifier used, the auxiliary grid current being used for gain-control in the signal-transmission circuit. As shown, carrier telegraph signals are demodulated by the rectifier bridge D, the control grid of the relay-operating valve T3 being connected through a high-resistance 13 to the bridge load resistance 6. The suppressor grid of valve T3 is connected to an adjustable tapping 15 on resistance 6, and its grid current flows through the biasing resistance 16 of the carrier-frequency valve T1 to reduce its gain.
