Abstract
528,129. Purifying oils. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., MILTON, R., and TAUSSKY, I. April 27, 1939, No. 12677. [Class 91] Animal and vegetable oils are decolorized by sodium hypochlorite solution in presence of ceric sulphate. Alkali may be present, and treatment with bleaching earth may follow. Preferably the hypochlorite is produced by the electrolysis of brine, e.g. in the cells described in Specifications 400,247, 425,703 and 458,594, [all in Group XXXVI], the solutions of ceric sulphate and hypochlorite are sprayed in succession on to an emulsion formed by injecting steam into a mixture of the oil and water until the temperature is about 212‹F., and any fatty acids produced are removed afterwards. The treated oil is separated from aqueous liquid by standing or by centrifuging, and may be washed with water or sodium chloride solution.
