[Classes 83 (ii) and 84 (iv)] [Also in Group XIII] Assembling force fits.-Apparatus for assembling gilled flanges, particularly of aluminium on heat exchange tubes is described with reference to U-tubes. The tube is held in a block 28 by a drift pin 29 and the upper leg is supported by a mandrel 27 clamped at 33. A pilot 45 is slipped into the lower leg and a flanged collar 10 with a groove forming a tapering flange 13 is placed in position together with a steel pressing ring 14. A hollow piston-rod 36 is then advanced by hydraulic pressure to force the flange over the tube to its final position. The piston is then backed away a little and the sleeve 38 is turned to bring the flat parts 44 into contact with the flats on a sleeve 37, thus separating the sleeves and enabling the ring 14 to be forced home on the next forward stroke. The bore of the discs may be cut to form one or more slots to provide a degree of resiliency. A modified construction is described in which the variable spacing of the two operative sleeves is obtained by a removable split collar. Flanges 16 seat snugly into recesses on the next gill to protect the steel rings from liquid.
