527,525. Altering physical structure. WILLIAMS, W. P. (American Rolling Mill Co.). April 13, 1939, No. 11280. [Class 83 (iv)] In a process of producing high permeability silicon steel, hot rolled silicon steel pieces are cold rolled to produce a reduction of between 60 per cent. to 85 per cent. while keeping the temperature below the boiling point of water, annealing the work and subjecting it to a second cold rolling reduction of between 40 per cent. to 65 per cent. at a similar low temperature and finally heat treating the work preferably at approximately 2200‹F. in an atmosphere of hydrogen. In one example given, the first cold rolling reduces the thickness of the strip from 0.105 inch to 0.029 inch in from four to six passes. It is then open annealed at 1850‹F. and in the second stage of cold rolling is reduced in from six to ten passes from 0.029 inch to 0.013 inch. The treatment is stated to produce a cold rolling orientation and turning of the crystals. The composition of the steel is preferably silicon 2.90 per cent. to 3.30 per cent.; carbon, 0.02 per cent. or under; manganese 0.06 per cent. to 0.09 per cent. and sulphur 0.03 per cent. or under.
