Abstract

527,213. Destructive distillation of pitch. TRINIDAD LEASEHOLDS, Ltd. (Berry, A. G. V., and Cheetham, K. H.). Feb. 1, 1939, No. 3424. [Class 55 (ii)] Activated carbon is prepared by chlorinating pitch, and subjecting the chlorinated product to destructive distillation. A final temperature of 900 ‹C is specified. The term "pitch" includes tars, pitches and other bituminous or waxy residues such as are produced by the distillation and/or cracking of petroleum oils, crude coal tar and like substances. The chlorinated product, before destructive distillation, may be subjected to one or more washings with water and/or other solvents, and the carbonaceous residue produced by the destructive distillation may be treated with superheated steam or subjected to other activation treatment.
