Abstract

526,073. Boring; boring-heads. MAYER & SCHMIDT SCHLEIF-MASCHINEN-U. SCHMIRGEL-WERKE AKT.-GES. March 7, 1939, No. 7466. Convention date, March 7, 1938. [Class 83 (iii)] In a boring-head for boring holes of varying diameter a tool carried by a radial slide in the head is coupled to a movable rod extending axially through the spindle and operated by a rotatable member on the spindle, said member being rotated by the co-operation of a template and roller, one of which is mounted on a stationary part of the machine and the other attached to the rotary member. The cutter is mounted in a carrier 17 radially adjustable by a screw 18 in a transverse slide 10 which is provided with rack teeth 19 and is moved radially in the head 8 by means of a pinion 21 in the head rotatable through rack teeth on an axially slidable rod 22. This rod is normally pressed upwards by a spring 27 and is secured axially by a transverse pin 28 to a sleeve 31 splined at 47 within a non- rotatable sliding sleeve 2. Axial motion of the rod 22 is limited by a slot 29 in a hollow shaft 5 attached to a rotatable shaft 3 which drives the head 8 through a sleeve 6 and shank 7. The sleeve 31 engages through a screw-thread 32 with a rotatable sleeve 30 carrying radial pins 35 passing through horizontal slots 36 in the sleeve 2 and attached to a rotatable outer sleeve 37 carried by needle and ball bearings 38, 39 on the sleeve 2. A roller 45 on a fixed part of the machine engages an interchangeable cam-bar 42 attached to the sleeve 37 so that the latter will be rotated as the sleeve 2 is fed axially by a slide 1 on the machine, to move the rod 22 axially and thus adjust the cutter radially to produce a bore of varying diameter along its length. The sleeve 6 is rotatable in bearings 4 in the sleeve 2 and the pin 28 engages the sleeve 31 through bearing rings 49 secured by a screwed sleeve 40. Rotation of the sleeve 37 is restrained by a spring 51, and the positions of the roller 45 and cambar 42 may be reversed, the sleeve 37 then being unnecessary.
