Abstract
525,948. Tempering glass. COMPAGNIES REUNIES DES GLACES ET VERRES SPECIAUX DU NORD DE LA FRANCE. March 3, 1939, No. 7069. Convention date, March 3, 1938. [Class 56] A device for holding a glass sheet in a vertical position during tempering comprises pairs of wires which embrace the sheet, means for separating at least one end of the wires of each pair by a distance approximately equal to the thickness of each sheet, and a weight or weights supported below the sheet by the wires to keep them taut. Each pair, 4, 5, Figs. 1 and 2, may consist of a length of wire passed through holes in a T-iron and around a bar 7 which keeps it taut. The wire is twisted at 6 above the bar to form a support for the lower edge of the glass sheet 1, and a flat bar 8 is pivoted to the iron 2 and extends between the wire 4, 5. The thickness of the bar 8 and of the iron 2 is approximately equal to that of the glass sheet, and the bar can be turned by a handle 11 to separate the wires to allow the insertion of the sheet. The lower ends of the wires also can be spaced apart by passing them through a slot, preferably tapered, in a member 12, Fig. 5, and clamping them in the slot by a wedge 14. The wires may also be passed between bars which can be clamped together by a rotatable wedging-device. In another construction, the wires are gripped between a central bar 18, Fig. 8, and two side bars 16 by means of tongs 23. A similar device may be used for holding the wires at their upper ends.
