Abstract

525,661. Submarine sound oscillators. ELECTROACUSTIC GES. Feb. 24, 1939, No. 6239. Convention date, March 28, 1938. [Class 40 (iv)] In a magneto-strictive oscillator comprising two masses connected by a magnetostrictive elastic system, the two masses are additionally interconnected by relatively elastic members to masses which constitute nodal zones of the oscillator during its oscillation. As shown in Fig. 1, the masses 1, 2 which are connected by magnetostrictive members 4 surrounded by coils are also connected by webs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> to masses 3, 3<SP>1</SP> which form nodal zones during the operation of the oscillator. The upper surface of the mass 1 may be flush, with that of the arms 5, Fig. 3 (not shown), or the outer surfaces of the mass 1 and of the webs 5 may be streamlined, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5, an oscillator comprising the masses 1, 2 is connected by webs 8, 9 to an oscillator of similar type comprising masses 6, 7 and the elements are dimensioned so that one of the oscillators forms a nodal zone in respect of the oscillation of the other member and vice versa. The appropriate dimensions are calculated by comparison with the equivalent electrical circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown).
