[Class 59] Feed mechanism for a roller mill for cereal grain comprises a horizontal vibrating or reciprocating member moving in the gap at the base of the hopper and means for regulating the feed rate automatically in accordance with the head of stock in the hopper by varying either the amplitude of movement of the horizontal member or the size of the gap at the base of the hopper. As shown in Fig. 1, a bar a is reciprocated above a vertically adjustable base plate e by an eccentric m, arm k, lever g pivoted at h, and link f, and the amplitude of the reciprocations is controlled by the movement of a pin j in a slot i in the lever g under the action of depending link n, a lever o pivoted at o<SP>1</SP>, and a plate p which rises or is depressed in accordance with the pressure head of stock in the hopper b. Instead of varying the throw of the bar a the plate e may be connected to the plate p so that the feed gap is automatically varied. In a further arrangement the rate of delivery from the hopper is controlled by the automatic raising and lowering of a gate at the lower edge of a side of the hopper, and plates are fitted upon the horizontal member of an L-section reciprocating frame to provide a stepped form at that side at which delivery occurs. The reciprocations should be at a rate of not less than 400 per minute. According to the first Provisional Specification, the feed unit including the means for reciprocating the vibrating bar may be removable from the machine or it can be lifted about a pivot to put it into or out of service position ; and provision may be made for locking the pin j in position.
