Abstract

524,510. Condensation products. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 31, 1939, No. 3259. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Flame - resistant resinous compositions are prepared by heating in the presence of a condensing agent an alkyl-substituted aryl phosphate containing halogen in the alkyl radical with an aromatic compound having reactive hydrogen atoms. Condensates obtained using a phenol and the aromatic compound may be rendered heat-hardenable by heating with formaldehyde. Suitable phosphates include halogenated tricresyl phosphate, dicresyl monophenyl phosphate, dicresylmonoxylyl phosphate, dicresyl mononaphthyl phosphate, dicresyl monochlorophenyl phosphate; suitable aromatic compounds includebenzene,xylene, naphthalene, anthracene, diphenyl, chlorodiphenyl, diphenyl oxide, triphenylphosphate, or tricresyl phosphate or phenols ; suitable condensing agents are sulphur or a halide of iron, aluminium, tin or zinc. In examples chlorinated tricresyl phosphate is reacted in the presence of ferricchloride with (1) a mixture of tricresyl and naphthalene; (2) monochlorophenyl; (3) diphenyl ; (4) triphenyl phosphate ; (5) tricresyl phosphate ; (6) naphthalene ; (7) a mixture of triphenyl and tricresyl phosphate and (8) o-cresol. The products may be used to impregnate asbestos, spun glass, paper, or cloth covered cables ; to bind cork, asbestos, wood flour, or spun glass in moulding compositions ; to laminate paper or cloth in the formation of gaskets ; to coat wires ; as an adhesive ; or in the formation of coating compositions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of halogenated alkyl substituted aryl esters in general. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
