Abstract

524,402. Machinery guards. MACLAUGHLIN, J. A., and McGOWAN, J. Jan. 30, 1939, No. 3069. [Class 80 (iv)] A mincing &c. machine, having a removable cover located sufficiently above the top of the bowl of the machine to permit of feeding in the meat but not allowing passage of the operator's hand or arm, is provided with means operated by the starting and stopping device to prevent the cover from being moved when the machine is in motion, and to prevent the machine from being set in motion whilst the cover is open. The tray 2, from which the meat is fed to the bowl 1 of the machine, has a cover 8 hinged to its rear end 2a and formed with extensions 8a, which, when the machine is running, pass through open-ended slots in a frame-member 10 attached to a slidable shaft 11, which carries the belt-shifting fork of the machine, so that the cover cannot be raised when the machine is running. A stop-bar 15, which is carried by the frame 10 and projects over the cover, also prevents it from rising. When the shaft 11 is moved endwise to stop the machine, the slots in the frame 10 pass clear of the extensions 8a of the cover, and the bar 15 comes into alignment with a slot 16 in the cover, which can then be raised. It may be held raised by a pivoted catch. The projection of the bar 15 through the slot 16 prevents the machine from being started until the cover is lowered.
