Abstract
523,147. Shuttles. PLAISTOWE, E. R. H. Oct. 25, 1938, No. 30802. [Class 142 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXIV. V, XXIV and XXX] Bodies movable in tubes, cylinders, or guides, e.g., shuttles moving in guideways, are provided with engaging surfaces consisting of one or more antifriction rings, bands, segments or other projections formed wholly or partially of self lubricating material and having freedom of movement relatively to the body in one or more directions, the self-lubricating material consisting of a porous metal which subsequent to its formation by pressing and centering operations is impregnated with a liquid lubricant. Such self-lubricating materials are described in Specifications 449,521, 458,829 and 488,590, [all in Group V]. Fig. 1 shows a shuttle a fitted with a self-lubricating ring c engaging a guide-surface d and movable axially on a portion of the shuttle of reduced diameter. Fig. 2 shows a piston fitted with self-lubricating rings c movable radially in grooves e. The rings c may be formed with tongues engaging cast iron, steel or other metal rings or segments in.the grooves e and may have also a certain degree of axial movement on the piston. The movement of the rings e may be restrained by springs or rubber buffers. The invention is also applicable to containers propelled through pneumatic tubes. The Provisional Specification states the lubricant may consist of grease or an alloy of low melting point.
