[Class 40 (iv)] In a multiplex carrier telephone system in which signals, e.g. dialled impulses or calling signals, are transmitted by means of the carrier wave, which is suppressed during speech, or by a current of a frequency in the range of the speech side-band, an amplitude limiter is included in the input circuit of the signal receiver. As shown, the amplitude limiter is a valve with a grid condenser and leak designed to keep the output current substantially constant for different input amplitudes. The arrangement prevents false actuation of the receiver by speech since a proportion of the limited anode current of the valve is in that case necessarily of frequencies unsuitable for actuating the signal apparatus. The invention is described with reference to a system identical with that described in Specification 504,711.
