Abstract

In a television system, such as a colour system, wherein the transmission consists of a main signal v, v<SP>1</SP> on a main carrier V, a pair of quadrature-modulated signals c on a sub-carrier C, and a sound signal on a carrier S, a phasereference signal for demodulating the subcarrier is derived at the receiver from the difference frequency between the sound and main carriers. With signals having frequencies according to example shown, the sound carrier S appears at 3.5 Mc. after demodulation at a frequency centred on the main carrier V and after suitable selection from the modulation components is divided by 4/3 to provide a signal of 2.625 Mc. corresponding to the frequency at which the sub-carrier appears. The frequencies indicated are approximate, since, at the transmitter, the sub-carrier is arranged to be an odd multiple of half the line frequency which in turn is locked to the mains frequency. Starting with the 2.625 Mc. signal, this is multiplied by 4/3 to obtain the 3.5 Mc. for the sound carrier, and then finally the 3.5 Mc. is mixed with a 45 Mc. signal to obtain the 41.5 Mc. sound carrier for transmission. Fig. 2 (not shown), illustrates an alternative transmission signal in which the sub-carrier is located outside the band of the main signal. Specification 741,278 is referred to.
