Abstract

655,153. Multiplex radio signalling. BURGESS, A. F. (Parker,. L. W.). Dec. 19, 1946, No. 37431. [Class .40 (v)] [Also in Group XL (b)] A television receiver is provided with a selecting circuit preceding the detector and having a frequency characteristic such that both picture and sound carriers are passed to the detector. The detector demodulates the picture carrier, and mixes the two carriers so as to produce a beat frequency carrier for the sound signals. This arrangement ensures that unwanted interaction between the amplitude modulated picture signals and the frequency modulated sound signals is substantially eliminated. Fig. 1 shows a response curve for a receiver which passes both picture and sound carriers P, S to the detector, but in which the sound carrier operates near the bottom of the upper end of the response curve where the slope is substantially zero. In this manner the frequency modulated signals have little effect on the picture signals and if the amplitude of the sound carrier is limited to about 5 per cent of the picture carrier, a 90 per cent modulation of the picture carrier has no appreciable effect on the sound signals. Fig. 4 shows an idealized acceptance curve for the receiver, the sound signals being a frequency modulation on a carrier 4.5 Mc/s. higher than the carrier frequency of the amplitude modulated picture signal P. Both signals are fed to the detector the interaction of the two carrier frequencies produces a beat frequency of 4.5 Mc/s. Since the curve has zero slope at the point S only the picture signals will be detected and passed to a video amplifier, the sound signals being passed on to a frequency discriminator as a frequency modulation of the 4.5 Mc/s. beat frequency. The frequency characteristic of the selecting circuit may be made to correspond nearly to the idealized curve of Fig. 4 by combining the curves X and Y (Fig. 3). As shown in Fig. 5, the curve is derived by means of a broad band I.F., or R.F., coupling comprising inductance 21 and 24 between two valves 20 and 27 preceding the detector stage, and the curve Y is derived by means of an additional inductance 30 shunted by a resistor 31 and condenser 32 coupled to the I.F. or R.F. coupling.
