Abstract
522,522. Making caps for electric lamps. BARDY, J. Dec. 8, 1938, No. 35883. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Punching ; jointing by stamping.-Pins c are secured in the bayonet joint cap of electric lamp bulbs or like by an automatic machine in which each cap is pushed up into one of four sets of jaws 20, 21, Fig. 9, on a work carrier which is indexed to bring the cap between opposing holing- punches 28 which form the holes b, Fig. 2, and then bring it round to station C where pin holders 43 insert the headed pins in the holes and press them outwards until the hole edges are partly flattened as in Fig. 4 to grip and secure them. At the fourth station the cap is released by the jaws opened through rack and pinion mechanism 27 when the diametrically opposite jaws at the first station are closed on a new cap by means of the cam 22. The caps are pushed into the four jaws by a timed cam operated plunger 16. The holing-punches are actuated by another cam 31, the supporting mandrel core 33 being raised into the cap by cam 35. The headed tubular pins gravitate into notches 56 from which a reciprocating feed member 55 brings them in front of pushers 44<SP>1</SP> which press them on holding points 43 at the ends of arms 36 which carry the pins up into the bayonet cap so that a wedge 46 spreads them apart and so drives the pins into the holes with sufficient force to flatten the sides of the holes against the pins. The work carrier is rotated step by step by a Geneva wheel 13, and is held steady by a bolt 51 entering one of the V-slots in the periphery.
