Abstract

527,512. Electric incandescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 13. 1939, No. 11224. Convention date, April 13, 1938. [Class 39 (ii)] In a sealing head intended particularly for use in the turret sealing machine described in Specification 527,513 a bulb 10 is held by jaws 13 on an upper rotating spindle 47, and a cup 11 carrying the filament 18 and terminal posts 20 is supported by a cap 15 at the top of a lower rotating spindle 23 in a definite position relative to the bulb. The spindle 23 is supported on a track 25 which allows the spindle to drop for the insertion of the cup and the exhaust tube 19. The position of the cup is determined by studs 22 which engage the shoulder of the cup and support it. The jaws 13 holding the bulb are pressed against the bulb by springs 36 on levers pivoted to the spindles carrying the jaws. An arm 34 on the levers is mechanically or manually operated to open the jaws for insertion or removal of the bulb. When a raised portion of the track pushes the cup against the bottom of the bulb the top of the bulb is pressed against a shoe 39 on a rod 40 having an arm 45 engaging with an inclined slot. 42. The rod is raised to accommodate the bulb by rotating it mechanically or manually by means of a lever 43. The upper and lower spindles 47, 23 are rotated simultaneously by spur wheels 51, 54 engaging wheels 50, 53 on the spindles. The cup is pressed more tightly against the bulb at the final heating station by a weighted, lever 58 which engages a shoe 26 on spindle 23. The weighted end of the lever is normally supported by a rod 62 pivoted to a lever 63 engaging a cam 64 which is so formed that at the final station, the support of the rod 62 is withdrawn. Specification 471,301, [Group XXXVI], also is referred to.
