Abstract
546,803. Machines for making electric incandescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 24, 1941, No. 9393. Convention date, July 24, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (ii)] Relates to a turret machine for automatically positioning and attaching the filaments of electric lamps in relation to the leading-in wires and in relation to the focus of the base of the lamp, especially a lamp as described in Specification 515,091 with a vitreous reflecting base with leading-in wires sealed in it and finally covered by a sealed-down lens forming an enclosure which is gas-filled. According to the invention, the various operations performed in sequence on the base element at the successive stations are effected by hydraulic operation of the various tools and devices, the necessary control valves being operated in sequence by cams on a shaft driven by the electric motor which drives the turret, stage by stage. At station A the base element with. its leading-in wires in position is placed in position on a carrier ; it is carried round to station B where the carrier is adjusted by hand-controlled lifting or lowering means. The degree of adjustment required is indicated by a galvanometer in connection with a two-element photo-cell which is brought into the operative position in relation to the reflector and a fixed source of light by the movement of a cylinder under the action of oil pressure automatically supplied at the right moment, Fig. 4 (not shown). At the adjusted position, the base element is locked by jaws and carried on to station C where one of the leads is bent to the required shape by a tool operated hydraulically at the right moment. At station D, the other three lead-in wires are bent ; at station E all four wires are cut by a plane hydraulically operated, and at stations F and G two of them are grooved at their ends preparatory to receiving the filaments. At stations H and J a filament is picked up from an intermittently-rotating side-table, swung into position in the grooves of the lead-in wires by a pneumatically-actuated carrier and pressed into engagement by a hydraulically-operated tool. At the final station K, the base carrier is lowered and unlocked so that it can be removed.
