Abstract
522,518. Safety cut-off valves. HORSTMANN, K. J., and HORSTMANN GEAR CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1938, No. 33328. [Class 135] A thermally controlled safety cut-off device for gas burners has a main valve biassed to open against the action of supply pressure acting on a movable wall, the chamber on the other side of the wall being adapted to be sealed by a thermally-actuated auxiliary valve maintained closed by the heat of a burner supplied through the main valve to hold the main valve open. In the form shown in the Figure the chamber 8 on the remote side of the diaphragm 7 is connected through a constriction 11 and conduit 10 with the main conduit in the outlet side of the main valve 2. The chamber 8 is vented through a conduit 12 adapted to be closed by a valve 6 when the bimetallic loop 9 is heated. To set the device the main cock 3 is closed, and auxiliary heat is applied to the loop 9. When the valve 6 has closed the cock 3 is reopened and the pilot burner 5 supplied through the conduits 10, 12 ignited. Thereafter the heat from the pilot burner maintains the valve 6 closed until such time as the gas supply is interrupted. In a modification, the conduit 10 and restriction 11 are omitted, the pilot burner fed directly from the outlet conduit.
