Abstract
522,248. Push-button tuning mechanism. COLE. Ltd., E. K., and SHACKELL. A. Oct. 11, 1938. No, 29389. [Class 37] In push button tuning arrangements of the cam and lever type the depression of a push button lever increases the potential energy of a spring which is released at the end of the lever stroke to effect the tuning operation. The motion of the tuning gear is controlled by a governor and the adjusting means for the initial setting of the press buttons is only accessible when the latter are in the depressed position. Each press button 1 is mounted on a lever 2 pivoted on a pin 3 and provided with bifurcated arms 2a, 2b. The arm 2a projects through a slot in a sliding rod 4 which supports a pivoted cam 17 and a bell-crank lever 8 having arms 8a, 8b and pivoting on a pin 7 carrying a disc 6. The arm 8a is attached to the lever 2 by a spring 21 and cord passing over a roller 5. The rod 4 is held in the neutral position by a catch 12 engaging in a slot 11 in which position the arm 8b engages a stop 9. The tuning elements (e.g. ganged condensers) are connected through suitable gearing (not shown) to a slotted rocker bar 18. On depressing the lever 2 against the action of a restoring spring 15, the tension of the spring 21 is increased until a lip. on the arm 2b passes over the end of a spring actuated latch bar 14 thereby locking the lever (and at the same time releasing any other lever in the operative position). At the same time a projection 13 on the arm 2b contacts with the disc 6 thus raising the sliding bar 4 to free it from the catch 12 whereupon the bar moves under the action of the spring 21 until the cam 17 contacts with the rocker 18 and moves this and the attached tuning elements to the desired position. Movement of the bar 4 is controlled bv frictional contacts of the cam 8b with a roller 10 provided with any type of governor mechanism. Initial setting of the tuning is obtained by tuning in the required station manually and then depressing the lever until the freely pivoted cam 17 enters into correct angular engagement with the rocker 18 whereupon the cam is locked in the set position by a locking member 19, adjusted by a knob 20 which is only accessible when the button 1 is depressed.
