Abstract

522,098. Reducing ores. HODSON, F., and HIRSCH, P. A. Oct. 6, 1938, No. 29008. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1937. [Class 51 (ii)] Finely divided ores to be reduced are introduced into an upwardly flowing column of reducing-gases the velocity of which is regulated so as to cause the ore to be carried upwardly and maintained in, suspension until it is reduced to metal, while the temperature of the gases is kept sufficiently low to avoid fusion. The ore may be mixed with a finely-divided reducing agent such as coal dust, or it may be introduced as a colloidal suspension in oil, and the upwardly flowing gases are preferably caused to rotate or whirl as they move upwards, e.g., by injecting the air and fuel non-radiailly. The particles of ore when completely or sufficiently reduced settle out of the upwardly flowing stream owing to their increased specific gravity. A furnace for carrying out the process consists 'of concentric shafts 14, 16 into the inner of which fuel and air are delivered through angularly-adjustable nozzles 24, and ore, reducing agents and fuel through, nozzles 26, either above the fuel nozzles as shown, or below them. Alternatively the ore &c. may be dropped into the upwardly moving gases from the top of the shaft. A depending exhaust flue 20 for waste gases extends downwards to below the upper edge 22 of the shaft 14 and in operation some of the particles of ore will pass over the edge 22 and be deposited in the annular space between the shafts, while the remainder will collect at the bottom of the inner shaft. Other forms of furnace described consist of single cylindrical or truncated conical shafts with depending exhaust flues.
