Abstract
In a method of separating particles of material in a separating medium which has auxiliary particles distributed in it and has a density lower than the heaviest and higher than the lightest particles of the mixture being separated, friction is reduced in the medium by coating the auxiliary particles with an oily agent which is attached to the auxiliary particles by means of a heteropolaric agent, the molecule of which, on the one hand, has a reactive group which can react with the auxiliary particle to anchor the heteropolaric agent and thus also the oily agent to the auxiliary particle and, on the other hand, an oleophilic non-reactive group which adsorbs the oily agent. The oily agent is preferably an aliphatic hydrocarbon such as combustible or lubricating oil and can be attached to auxiliary particles of oxidic iron ores (magnetite) by means of fatty acids or related acids, such as palmitic acid, tall fatty acid or salts of any one of these acids; if silica sand or rock is used as the material for the auxiliary particles then the oily agent can be attached to them by means of an alkyl amine such as octyl amine or dodecyl amine. In an embodiment, the particles to be separated are supplied to a bed of treated auxiliary particles which are conveyed over a shaking table as water is flushed into the bed from below; air or another gas is blown into the bed from below for the purpose of controlling the density of the bed. The invention is also applicable to the suspension procedure in which the material to be separated is supplied to a water suspension of the auxiliary particles.
