Abstract

521,894. Manures. COOMBS, J. A. Nov. 24, 1938, Nos. 34138/38 and .11463/39. [Class (iii)] Fertilizers are prepared from refuse, waste material and garbage by fermentation carried out on a bed or floor of cinder or like loose material, the garbage being drenched at intervals with activated sludge or sewage effluent, and the materials being preferably arranged on the cinders in pyramid shaped heaps or ridges. On a suitable plant heaps of fermenting material 15 are on a cinder floor 13, a mechanical labourer 50 mounted on a gantry 29 being used to move and distribute the fermenting material and a bucket elevator 31 being used to load the material. The plant is covered by a movable roof 19. The heaps are progressively moved across or along the plant as the fermentation progresses. The fermentation is activated by sprinkling and the fermenting means intermittently drenched with sewage sludge and effluent from the tank 51. Specifications 496,547, 496,637 and 514,6217 are referred to.
