Abstract

520,493. Cellulose ester yarns, foils &c. DREYFUS, H. Oct. 24, 1938, No. 30680. [Class 2 (ii)] Yarns, foils, and similar materials made of cellulose or cellulose derivatives are subjected to esterification treatment with a medium comprising the anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid and carbonyl chloride or thiocarbonyl chloride. Products soluble or insoluble in organic solvents may be obtained. The products may have a raised safe ironing temperature and raised melting point. The reaction may be carried out with moderate heating or at 100-200‹C. Xylene or other solvent for the anhydride and carbonyl chloride may be used. Malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, citric, phthalic tetrachlorophthalic, or hexahydrophthalic anhydride may be used. Cellulose acetate, propionate, or butyrate, or ethyl or propyl cellulose materials or materials of natural or regenerated cellulose may be treated. There may be used yarns obtained by the saponification of cellulose acetate yarns. In an example, cellulose acetate woven fabric is treated with a solution of phthalic anhydride in xylene while carbonyl chloride is bubbled through the solution. In another example, adipic anhydride is dissolved in xylene and regenerated cellulose hanks are treated in the solution while carbonyl chloride is bubbled through.
