520,480. Catalytic apparatus. GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE OBERHAUSEN AKT.-GES. Oct. 11, 1938, No. 29408. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1937. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] For the oxidation of hydrocarbons particularly to formaldehyde in the gas phase by means of air containing nitrogen oxides in the presence of solid oxide catalysts, the gas mixture is passed through a number of uniformly heated tubes containing, made of, or used with the catalyst which may be an oxide of silicon, zinc, magnesium, titanium, cerium, or similar metal. In Fig. 1, the reaction tubes d are heated by burners b. In Fig. 3 the gases from the burners b after passing around the tubes d are returned to the vicinity of the burners by a fan e, a part being removed by a flue f. In another construction, the tubes are heated by a regenerative heater. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the use of natural rocks such as granite, porphyry, mica and quartz as catalysts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 21,941/05, [Class 2], 275,321, 300,968, [both in Class 1 (i)], 433,559, [Group IV], and U.S.A. Specification 1,991,344.
